I live in a lovely part of Edinburgh called Portobello, which is Edinburgh’s seaside. I am lucky enough to live right on the Promenade beside the beach. Before I had children, I tended to find a lot of my inspiration from places far away and exotic, but then I found myself much more limited about where I could go – sometimes it was all I could do to get out to the Co-op! I decided to make a series of works about where I live, and realised there was a rich source of interesting subjects right on my doorstep. The seaside was changing, and I discovered I was drawing places and shops which were disappearing as demand for them fell; the work became almost a document of how these changes, and once again my perpetual themes of what we value as a human race, came to the fore.
