In 2017, I had the opportunity to take part in Hidden Door Festival. I wanted to create an installation that represented a ‘Treasury’ – I had recently been to the Tower of London and seen the Crown Jewels displayed so evocatively. I was also intrigued by the metal detectorists I saw on the beach outside our door, and wondered what they found. (I had also just seen the wonderful ‘Detectorists’ with Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook!) I wanted to create a treasury of things I found on the beach. In the event, I did not find treasure, but did find all kinds of objects that tell a story about what we value, what we discard, and what people use to live their everyday lives.
